Coke

Metallurgical coal, also called metcoal or coking coal, is a type of coal that is used in the production of steel. It is of a higher purity than thermal coal which is used in energy generation. To make steel, metcoal is heated at around 1100 degrees C to remove water and other chemicals. This is done without the presence of oxygen. The result is a lump of near-pure carbon which is called coke.

Coal

The classification of Chinese coal is based on the volatile matter content, dividing all coal into Lignite, Bituminous coal, and Anthracite.

For lignite and anthracite, they are further divided into 2 and 3 subcategories respectively based on their coalification degree and industrial utilization characteristics.

Bituminous coal is divided into low, medium, medium-high, and high volatile matter bituminous coal according to the volatile matter content in four stages: >10%-20%, >20%-28%, 28%-37%, and >37%. As for the caking property of bituminous coal, it is classified according to the caking index G: 0-5 for non-caking and weakly caking coal; >5-20 for weakly caking coal; >20-50 for moderately weakly caking coal; >50-65 for moderately strong caking coal; and >65 for strongly caking coal. Among the strongly caking coal, those with the maximum vitrinite reflectance Y >25mm or ovoid texture b >150% (for bituminous coal with Vdaf>28%, b>220%) are classified as extra-strongly caking coal. In the naming of coal types, considering the continuity of the old and new classifications, eight coal types are retained: gas coal, fat coal, coking coal, lean coal, poor coal, weakly caking coal, non-caking coal, and long-flame coal.
